You feel the gossip and rumors swirling around you.
Colleagues who used to be supportive have become distant.
You've been excluded, monitored, and positioned as the problem.
Is it just one person doing the damage?
Was there an actual conflict?
Or are you left wondering, what did I do to deserve this?
Bullying is typically an overt attack.
Obvious.
Workplace mobbing is quieter coordinated harassment.
It leaves you feeling isolated, powerless, and confused,
by design.
Or, is the whole office simply trying to cope with
an unusually high level of stress for some reason.
And you're feeling the brunt of it.
In any case
it can ruin your day,
day-after-day.
When pervasive mistreatment carries on long enough
it can trickle into other areas of your life,
and ruin those too.
There's something about being abused in the workplace is uniquely hurtful.
We expect safety to be a given in our professional environment.
Because we're all following the same rules of conduct. Right?
So when someone targets us with aggressive behavior,
it disrupts our idea of being in a safe place.
The place where we earn our livelihood.
Provide for our families.
And we become shocked, threatened, hurt, and scared,
all at the same time.
Whatever you're experiencing,
please know that recognizing and understanding the behavior
is where everything begins to get better -
I promise.
Are you the target of a hostile work environment?
Workplace mobbing? Or something else entirely?
It changes everything;
from how you respond-
to how you protect yourself-
and perhaps most importantly-
deciding the best way forward for your situation.
The free Self-Assessment will tell you.
It takes just two minutes and gives you something
most targets never get:
You’re not meant to thrive in this environment.
You're meant to get through it.
Stabilize yourself.
Protect your mental health.
And once you've gained
clarity in the chaos, take a breath,
then decide what comes next.
I created the When the Office Turns Against You series after experiencing workplace mobbing firsthand. I hadn't even heard of the term at the time.
After a long career and two good years into what I thought would be my final role before retirement, my workplace dynamics shifted in ways that were incomprehensible. What followed was a pattern of unsettling psychological harassment, impacting my health, damaging my professional reputation, and ultimately costing me my job.
When I reported what was happening to my boss, who was the owner and HR, he looked at me and said:
Do you think everyone is out to get you?
That was my aha moment.
I realized that the mob against me planted this idea and had successfully weaponized him.
I began looking for another job immediately. But before I could secure one, I was terminated.
Not getting the chance at the ideal outcome of leaving on my own terms felt like salt was being poured on a wide open wound. It compelled me to find clarity of my own. I spent the months following my termination researching and learning everything I could find about what had happened to me. And there was not a lot to find. I discovered that due to a lack of awareness and understanding of workplace mobbing, many targets go through it alone - with no tools, and no one who truly gets it.
On this part of my journey, I acquired understanding, tools, practices, and a support network that gave me the clarity about workplace mobbing that I needed to begin moving forward. While I wish I had these resources sooner, I can now see them as a gift that I can pass on to help others who need them.
This series was created to provide clarity, validation, and practical insight for anyone navigating any type of hostile work environment.
If that is you, I'm very sorry.
